Our Gurmat classes help students learn about Sikhi in a structured, respectful and encouraging environment. Classes may include Gurmukhi, Gurbani reading, Gurbani Santhiya, Sikh history, Sikh values, Kirtan, Simran, Ardas and age-appropriate discussions.
Beginners are welcome, and students are guided according to their age, experience and learning level.
Why Gurmat Education Matters
Gurmat education helps students understand the spiritual, historical and ethical foundations of Sikhi. Through regular learning, students can develop confidence in reading Gurmukhi, a stronger connection with Gurbani, knowledge of Sikh history, understanding of Sikh values, respect for Sangat and Seva, and confidence in their Sikh identity.
The purpose is not simply to complete lessons. It is to encourage students to carry Sikh values into everyday life.
What Students Learn
Gurmukhi
Students learn the Gurmukhi alphabet, letters, sounds, word formation, reading and writing. Beginners start with the basic alphabet and pronunciation. Developing students work on reading fluency, vocabulary and written exercises.
Gurbani Reading
Students are introduced to Gurbani reading in a patient and respectful manner. Lessons may include common Banis, Shabads and selected passages appropriate to the student’s level.
Gurbani Santhiya
Santhiya focuses on reading Gurbani carefully with improved pronunciation, pauses and awareness of Gurmukhi sounds. Students progress gradually and are encouraged to practise regularly at home.
Sikh History
Students learn about the lives and teachings of the Sikh Gurus, the Sahibzaade, Mata Gujri Ji, important Sikh personalities, historical Gurdwaras, major events in Sikh history and the development of the Khalsa. Lessons are presented according to the age and understanding of the students.
Sikh Values
Students discuss Naam Japna, Kirat Karni, Vand Chhakna, equality, humility, compassion, courage, honest living, respect, responsibility and selfless service.
Kirtan
Where available, students may learn basic harmonium, tabla and rhythm, Shabad pronunciation, melody, timing and respectful Kirtan presentation. Students are encouraged to understand the Shabad rather than treating Kirtan only as musical performance.
Seva
Students are encouraged to participate in age-appropriate Seva, such as organising materials, helping with events, assisting younger students and taking part in Langar-related activities.
Learning Groups
Young Learners
For children beginning their Gurmat journey. Lessons may use repetition, activities, visual learning and short stories.
Junior Students
For children developing Gurmukhi reading, Sikh history knowledge and basic Gurbani familiarity.
Senior Students and Teenagers
For students ready for deeper discussions, presentations, Gurbani learning, Sikh history and leadership activities.
Adults
Adult classes may be available for Gurmukhi, Gurbani reading, Santhiya, Kirtan or Sikh history.
Our Teaching Approach
We aim to create a classroom environment that is respectful, encouraging, age appropriate, structured, patient, interactive and connected to real life.
Students are encouraged to ask questions and participate without fear of embarrassment. Teachers and Sevadars support different learning speeds and abilities. Regular attendance and home practice are encouraged because steady progress usually comes through consistency.
Parent and Family Participation
Parents play an important role in Gurmat education. Families can support students by bringing them to class regularly, arriving on time, reviewing lessons at home, encouraging Gurmukhi and Gurbani practice, attending programs, participating in Seva and communicating with teachers.
Parents do not need to be experts. Showing interest and encouragement can make a meaningful difference.

Registration
To register, please provide the student’s name and age, parent or guardian contact details, current Gurmukhi reading level, previous Gurmat learning experience, program of interest and any relevant learning or accessibility needs.
Registration is subject to class capacity and teacher availability. The center will confirm the current schedule, fees if applicable and required materials.
Class Expectations
- Attend regularly and arrive on time.
- Treat teachers, Sevadars and other students respectfully.
- Bring required books and materials.
- Participate sincerely and complete reasonable home practice.
- Follow the center’s code of conduct.
- Maintain appropriate behaviour in the Darbar Sahib and classrooms.
